Critical communications for London Array Windfarm

PMR products deployed clear and safety critical communications for the 100km2 London Array windfarm, located twelve miles from the Kent coast. Providing reliable communications is pivotal in facilitating the seamless interaction of the many personnel as they move around the vicinity.

We were tasked with facilitating three pivotal elements:

• Reachability

• Response

• Robustness

THE CHALLENGES

Turbine towers are constructed of steel and therefore create an almost impenetrable Faraday cage which prevents radio signals from outside transmitting within the tower structure. Once inside the turbine, technicians lose the ability to communicate.

THE SOLUTION

To ensure radio coverage both inside and outside the turbine towers we had to develop a system that provided a dedicated radio channel optimised to work inside each turbine and link it to the main site-wide TETRA system using a Gateway Repeater.

When a radio user moves in the tower, a location beacon is detected which automatically switches the radio to the turbine channel. When they leave and enter a vessel, the radio detects another beacon which switches it back to the main Tetra network.

THE RESULT

We created seamless communications between the operational teams and across a site; both outside and inside the tower. Additionally, they can now identify who is inside the tower or on a vessel by tracking the radio as the user enters or exits the tower.

CONCLUSION

Safety Critical Communications delivered seamlessly between land-based control rooms, offshore service platforms, service vessels, workers within the field, workers inside a turbine tower.

Providing for critical communications at a national stadium

PMR Products provides for critical communications at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff.

CLIENT

The 74 500 capacity Principality Stadium is the national stadium of Wales. Located in Cardiff, it is the home of the Wales national rugby union team but is also used for many other events including football matches and music concerts.

BACKGROUND

Safety is critical at the stadium, which required a robust communication solution to replace the existing analogue two-way radio system.

SOLUTION

The solution supplied by PMR Products to replace the legacy analogue system comprises a Rohill TETRA radio system and Sepura handsets. This TETRA system has Dual Redundancy to ensure communications are not lost in the event of equipment failure.

SafetyNet Software links the system with existing TETRA networks covering the city centre providing joined up communication for crowd control and incident management.

Communication for safety and efficiency at water treatment plant

SafetyNet software provides a complete solution for handling two-way radio communications and alerts and monitoring the location of workers indoors and outside at a major water treatment plant, improving communication, safety and efficiency.

BACKGROUND

PMR Products client was tasked with providing communication and worker safety at a site covering more than 15 acres and incorporating a Victorian pump house, modern blocks housing processing areas, decommissioned sand beds and smaller ancillary buildings, replacing a legacy system of analogue radios, mobiles and pagers.

SOLUTION

The streamlined solution provided makes use of Bluetooth beacons and GPS technology and Hytera two-way radios, which work with both technologies to provide coverage both indoors and outside

Location Monitoring and Communication

In the control room SafetyNet software monitors three key elements:

  1. The location of two-way radios users inside covered by Bluetooth beacons is shown on schematics of the building, with an icon for each radio tracking movement
  2. The location of two-way radio users covered by GPS are shown on a map of the site
  3. The communications enables control room staff to communicate with radio users, either one-to-many or as private calls, and to manage Lone Worker and Man Down alerts from radios, which provide for worker safety.

A full telephone interconnect allows radio users to make and receive telephone calls effectively making the onsite radios system a very powerful extension to the mobile telephone network

Alarm Handling

The water treatment works is a complex operation, and the control centre handles in the region of 1500 alerts a day from BMS and SCADA systems and the two-way radio users. Integrating the Hytera digital radios with SafetyNet software allows operatives to receive SCADA and BMS alerts direct to their two-way radio wherever they are on site so has freed them from the control room.
